BDSM, Consent, and Safety:  The Original Sources

Consent and safety are two of the most critical benchmarks of BDSM play and, by extension, spanking play.  There are multiple ideas about how to best ensure consent and safety, and how to understand what each truly means.

Here, we offer links to the original source documents for three of the frequently referenced frameworks for consent and safety.  Each is worth a read as we consider how to best approach these important concepts.  And, each offers its own nuances that can provoke conversation and reflection.
“Safe/Sane/Consensual” is arguably the most well known framework, which was promoted by David Stein and discussed in his 2002 essay, “Safe Sane Consensual: The Making of a Shibboleth.”

“Risk-Aware Consensual Kink (RACK)” was proposed by Gary Switch in a listserv post.  He subsequently prepared an 2009 essay for Vancouver Leather on this model.

An article in the July, 2014 edition of the Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality offered a new perspective called the 4 C’s, which stand for Caring, Communication, Consent, and Caution.

We hope that these perspectives offer useful material for insights on consent and safety!
